Kava has been showing up on more menus and store shelves, and a lot of people walk in asking what it actually is. We now carry kava at our Riverton and American Fork stores, so here is a plain-English guide for anyone who is curious.
Where kava comes from
Kava is made from the root of a plant grown across the Pacific Islands, including Fiji, Vanuatu, Tonga and Samoa. For generations, islanders have dried and ground the root, mixed it with water and shared it as a drink during gatherings and ceremonies. Today kava is sold in several forms, and the one that suits you depends on how you plan to use it.
What does kava taste and feel like?
Kava has an earthy, slightly bitter flavor that is not for everyone. Many people also notice a mild tingling or numbing feeling in the mouth, which is normal. People often describe enjoying it as part of a relaxed evening or a social get-together. Effects vary from person to person, so it is wise to start small.
Kava is not CBD
This is one of the most common questions we get. CBD comes from the hemp plant. Kava comes from a completely different plant. They are separate products, and one does not replace the other. If you already take CBD, let our staff know and we can talk through what makes sense for you. You can read more about CBD in our CBD basics guide.
Tips for first-timers
Start with a small amount and give it time before deciding whether you want more. Try it when you do not have anywhere to be. Buy from a store that can tell you what is in the product and where it came from. Skip alcohol when you are trying kava, and do not drive or operate machinery until you know how it affects you.
Who should talk to a doctor first
Kava is a dietary supplement and has not been evaluated by the FDA to diagnose, treat or cure any condition. Check with your doctor before trying it if you take prescription medication, have liver concerns, are pregnant or nursing, or have any health condition.
