It's one of the first questions we hear at our Riverton and American Fork stores, especially from truck drivers, nurses, first responders, military members and anyone with a job that tests. Short answer: CBD itself isn't what most drug tests look for, but some CBD products contain trace THC, and that can matter.
What do drug tests actually look for?
Standard workplace drug tests screen for THC, the compound in cannabis that causes a high, by looking for its metabolite (THC-COOH). They aren't designed to detect CBD. The problem is that not every CBD product is completely THC-free.
The three types of CBD, and what they mean for testing
- Full-spectrum: contains CBD plus other hemp compounds, including a legal trace of THC (0.3% or less). With regular use, that trace THC can build up. Highest risk if you're tested.
- Broad-spectrum: keeps many hemp compounds but has the THC removed. Lower risk.
- Isolate: pure CBD with nothing else. Lowest risk of the three.

Why "THC-free" still isn't a 100% guarantee
- Labeling varies by brand. Some products on the market have been found to contain more THC than their labels say, which is why buying from a store that stocks lab-tested brands matters.
- Amount and frequency matter. Taking large amounts of any hemp product every day increases exposure to trace compounds.
- Test sensitivity varies. Different tests and employers use different cutoffs.
Bottom line: if your job depends on a clean test, talk to your employer or medical review officer before using any CBD product.
How to lower your risk
- Choose THC-free formulas. Look for broad-spectrum or isolate products labeled THC-free or zero THC.
- Read the Certificate of Analysis (COA). This third-party lab report shows the measured THC. Look for "ND" (non-detect) next to delta-9 THC.
- Buy from a store that stocks lab-tested brands. Every brand we carry is third-party tested, and we'll show you the COA on request.
- Stick to the label serving size.
THC-free options we carry
- Wyld THC-free CBD gummies: broad-spectrum, 25mg CBD per gummy, in raspberry, huckleberry, blackberry and lemon
- Beehive Blends zero-THC sprays: Exhale, Nocturne, Vivid and PAIN, made in Utah
What about CBD balms and lotions?
Topicals are applied to the skin instead of swallowed, so they're generally considered a lower-exposure option. Still, no product can promise a specific test result. Ask us for the COA on any balm or lotion before you buy.
Heads up: federal hemp rules change December 11, 2026
A new federal hemp definition will limit hemp products to 0.4mg of total THC per container starting December 11, 2026 (unless Congress changes it again). That mainly affects full-spectrum and THC-containing products. Read more in our Utah CBD law guide.
