Utah loves fireworks. Between New Year's Eve, the Fourth of July and Pioneer Day on July 24, our pets get several loud nights a year. If your dog hides, shakes, paces or tries to bolt when the booms start, you're not alone. Here's a simple plan to help.
Start planning a week early
- Talk to your vet. If your pet has strong noise anxiety, your vet can recommend options, including whether CBD makes sense for your pet.
- Check ID tags and microchip info. Shelters often see more lost pets after fireworks nights.
- Practice a "safe spot." A crate or quiet room with a favorite blanket gives your pet a place to retreat.
On fireworks night
- Walk early, before dark, and keep your dog on a leash.
- Keep pets inside with windows and curtains closed.
- Add background noise like a fan, TV or calm music to soften the booms.
- Stay calm yourself. Pets pick up on our energy.
- Offer a chew or puzzle toy to keep them busy.
